It is a cultural wasteland, and walking thru the various neighbourhoods only confirms the fact that Mississauga was built with only the automobile in mind, as you walk by houses with 3, 4 sometime 5 cars parked at the front. Some of them parked in such a way that they completely block the sidewalk. I am just concerned as there have been other Kolbe applicants where Mississauga has misplaced test results and are being asked to retake the test again. And this is no joke. I personally know of one individual who may just have to do this.

Thank you again.

I've lived in Mississauga for over 20 years. Here in Mississauga the automobile is God. All of the shopping plazas are built around the automobile. You're right, Mississauga is totally unsustainable from a growth perspective. It was built during the days of cheap energy, and those days are drawing to a close. You will find some of the most obese people living here. And of course fat people must have their huge UAV's to drive around in. What's a 'UAV' you ask? It's an Urban Assault Vehicle, or as it's marketed by Detroit, an 'SUV'. Another feature testifying to the car as God are the many soul destroying intersections that can be found in Mississauga, like Mavis and Eglinton, Hwy 10 and Eglinton, or possibly the worst intersection in the world from a pedestrian standpoint.... Mavis and Derry. There are miles of sidewalk in Mississauga with nobody on them.
There used to be a farm at McLaughlin and Eglinton. It was the last working farm in Mississauga. I had hoped that when it was turned over to the developers there would be some consideration given to creating some green space in the so-called 'downtown core' of Mississauga. But that was not to be. Every square foot was dedicated to semi's and single family houses as well as a gas station/car wash combination. More urban sprawl with the automobile at it's heart. No matter what McCallion does, she missed the opportunity years ago to make Mississauga a truly people oriented city. Realizing her folly she is now building UP. There is virtually no more land left to grow the city outwards, so she now focuses on building permits for high density condos, especially in the area of Hwy 10 and Burnhamthorpe. The amount of high density building that is going on there is completely insane! The amount of traffic flowing both North and South on Hwy 10 is frightening. How can anyone live in this urban jungle of parking lots and polluted air?! If you don't think the air quality is bad in Mississauga due in no small part to it's overly dependence on the automobile, I defy you to stand at any of it's major intersections and take a deep breath.
So in summary what is Mississauga? It's a failed attempt at what a city could have been. It sold it's soul to the automobile and greedy land developers many years ago. And so, in fitting tribute to "Mississauga: The City of the Automobile".... as Wood y Allen once said about Los Angeles... "It's only socially redeeming quality is that you can turn right on a red light".

I must have flown into Pearson 400 times with my previous job and it's strange to say that aside from some layovers in hotels at night I haven't had much of an opportunity to see the area.

The other day whilst laid up I had a dream about you and Michelle Skypeing me. I'm trying desperately to recall the content of the dream, but all I can remember is that it resulted in me Fedexing you both a 13m bungee rope. I then awoke to the strains of my gobshite neighbour Kyle screaming "focking cont!" at the top of his voice - mouth like a sewer, and another reason to love moving on?

Oh, dear. The North American suburb, which earns the name city by virtue of population size--it will be the death of us, I know it.

Growing up I used to think it was called Miss-a-sausage!

My housemate just took a job running arts and culture for Mississauga, so it's bound to get better soon. But I still recommend getting those geese in a row, asap!

The birth of the new always brings about reminiscence for grime...

Part of me wants to run from the whole notion of where you now find yourself Quin - cars before pedestrians, 1 bus stop nearly a mile away, 35 minutes of pain seperating you from your beloved cuppa. But...but everytime I have to share my public space and almost stand public bone to pubic bone with some unsavoury person on the tube...everytime my local supermarket gets fenced off because of some random act of violence well to be honest where you find yourself doesn't seem so bad. Yeah we got grime, local newsagents and our fair share of "colourful characters", but I think I gave up glorifying the rotten bits of London and other cities a long time ago. Maybe Mississauga is a little on the sterile side, maybe in the end it's just a belly full away from giving you gut rot but it looks nice and gives you the chance to find out what life may be like on mars (or neptune if you prefer) ;) Oh and thank you so much for showing me your local mayor - surely you love living there for her alone!

Yes I came accross the delights of square one last year while researching a trip to Toronto Croatia's stadium (well, leisure centre), sadly never put into practice as we couldn't be arsed cometh the hour (it was, in principle, reachable by public transport).

Interesting stuff, mind you parts of it aren't far removed from some of Britain, just a little more extreme - Lillington where I grew up features identikit houses, few pubs, crappy transport and loads of people (probably easily a majority) who never walk anywhere.

You should take a trip to Houston sometime, it's astounding for a city of nearly 6 million, even Mississauga will seem like a thoroughly proper place oozing with culture!

My word for all this was and is sterile. It is magnificently clean but is missing the life forms - good and bad - that you find in the Londons and New Yorks of the world.

Of course I grew up in the urban centre that is Etobicoke:-).

[Notwithstanding the above comments, I am very proud to be Canadian even if I do live thousands of miles away.]
